Quilting with an Ipad

OK, maybe not actually quilting WITH my Ipad...  I haven't been getting as much quilting done as I had hoped I would, and I have to blame that partially on my Ipad.  I got an Ipad for Christmas and it has distracted me a little (or a lot...).  There are apps for everything these days!  One of my favorites is the "FootBook".

Not the one by Dr. Seuss "Wet foot, dry foot, low foot, high foot...".  A different foot book.

The one I'm referring to is about sewing machine feet!  Some really nice and very smart people got together and went through all the feet that are made for Janome Sewing machines.  They made videos about each foot with great explanations of how and when to use each foot.

I've been sewing for a long time, but when I saw this foot in with all of the feet that came with my Janome Horizon, I have to admit that I was puzzled.  Yes, there are some very brief instructions in the manual.  I'm sure I could figure it out after a while, but I would much rather watch someone use it and have them explain when to use it, not just how.

There is another app called "QuiltingCalc" that I could have used so I wouldn't have bought way too much fabric just to make sure I had "enough"...  This one can be used to figure out how much fabric you need for backing or borders or binding...and how much batting you need.  Let's say you are going to need 50  three inch squares of a certain fabric - it will tell  you how much yardage you need.  Cool stuff like that so I don't have to hurt my head and actually try to use math : )

There is even an app called "Quilt Shops" that you can use to find quilt shops anywhere in the USA you might be traveling.  I know I love to poke around shops that I have never been to before.

You can also subscribe to several different quilting magazines that come straight to your Ipad.  You can watch youtube videos right there while you are sitting at your sewing machine if you are trying to learn a new technique...  How handy is that?  I'm sure there are many more uses that I haven't discovered yet, but I will be looking for them!

I am trying to force myself to put down the Ipad and step away now so I can get back to my sewing machine.  Wish me luck!

  2. Jeanna...I wish I had an ipad so I could've watched your vid while trying to test my 1/4" foot! The ipod works but it's so darn small! Congrats on your new toy...and at least you are using it for quilt-related apps! lol!

  6. Piffle, I hope you see this, your return address is "no reply blogger" or I would send this answer right to you! Go to the App Store in I-Tunes and search for "FootBook" as one word, that should bring it up! Have fun!!
